Ruminant farming plays a vital role in supporting rural communities and ensuring food security.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Because grazing ruminants are permanently exposed to helminth parasites, effective worm control is essential for maintaining their health, welfare and productivity. While the use of antiparasitic drugs has been the primary method of control, overuse has led to drug resistance, posing a global challenge.<\/p>

SPARC aims to create a dynamic network across Europe, enhancing the performance and the resilience of ruminant livestock farms. By widely disseminating best practices, tools and sustainable worm control solutions, SPARC improves animal health and welfare, boosts economic performance and promotes environmental sustainability.<\/p>

National and international stakeholder networks will share sustainable worm control practices among farmers, across borders and production systems. The SPARC website will feature a Knowledge Exchange Platform (KEP), offering testimonies, case studies, videos, practice abstracts and decision support tools in local languages. SPARC\u2019s activities and results will also be communicated on social media and in professional journals. Ultimately, SPARC will initiate a lasting European-wide multi-actor community dedicated to developing solutions to combat anthelmintic resistance, supporting the green transition of European agriculture.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Our role is to provide the knowledge, education and coordination of effective control programmes for non-regulated diseases of livestock to the benefit of farmers and the wider livestock industry. As part of SPARC we will be leading aspects of WP4 in collecting and communicating technical material, so that the project becomes an excellent reference and source of expert knowledge on this topic. In SPARC zullen wij doelgerichte ontwormingsstrategie\u00ebn (\u2018targeted treatment\u2019) toepassen bij jongvee in Vlaanderen, waarbij het gebruik van wormmiddelen wordt afgestemd op het weidebeheer, om enerzijds overconsumptie van wormmiddelen tegen te gaan (belangrijkste risicofactor voor ontwikkeling van resistentie tegen wormmiddelen), maar anderzijds het welzijn, de gezondheid en de productiviteit van de dieren te behouden. Als co\u00f6rdinator van WP3 (samen met het Moredun Research Institute) zullen wij de implementatie van verschillende vormen van duurzame wormcontrole in verschillende landen en productiesystemen (kleine herkauwers en runderen) begeleiden. Il partner UNINA nell\u2019ambito del progetto SPARC, si occuper\u00e0 dell\u2019individuazione delle best practices per la diagnosi e il controllo sostenibile degli elminti in ovini da latte e bovini da carne al pascolo, realizzer\u00e0 materiale multimediale, organizzer\u00e0 giornate di formazione e focus group con allevatori, veterinari e consulenti aziendali. Si occuper\u00e0 inoltre della realizzazione di una piattaforma informatizzata per lo scambio di conoscenze e della creazione di un sistema informativo geografico (webGIS) interattivo e dinamico.<\/p>

Le CIIRPO est une structure associative d\u2019innovation et de transfert en production ovin allaitant. Elle m\u00e8ne des actions de recherche appliqu\u00e9e et de diffusion de connaissances technique aupr\u00e8s d\u2019un large public agricole et \u00e0 une \u00e9chelle \u00e0 la fois interr\u00e9gionale et nationale.
Sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9s en ovin allaitant, nous concentrerons nos travaux sur cette production dans le centre et l\u2019ouest de la France, en zone herbag\u00e8re. Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health has a global reach to farmers, meaning that our work is not restricted to any specific location or context (production systems).<\/p>

Our role at Boehringer can be succinctly described as providing all the pre-existing technical material to support the best practices for parasite control. Additionally, we assist in spreading the results of this initiative.<\/p>

The aim of this initiative is to bring about improvements in parasite control methods. We hope to shift from a blanket treatment approach for the entire herd, typically administered during the same time each year, to a more sustainable strategy. This new approach involves treating the right animals, with the right product, in the right dose, and at the right time. Met SPARC wil ZLTO weidende veehouders ondersteunen en inspireren in het vinden van duurzame oplossingen voor wormbestrijding, rekening houdend met het behoud van weidegang in combinatie met de vernatting van de natuur, en de residuen van ontwormingsmiddelen die in het milieu terecht kunnen komen.<\/p>

ZLTO gaat in (het zuiden van) Nederland aan de slag met weidende rundveehouders en schapenhouders om wormbestrijding op hun bedrijf te verduurzamen. Het project verzamelt in heel Europa goede landbouwpraktijken en op basis van een behoefte inventarisatie met dierenartsen, adviseurs en veehouders in 2024 wordt gekozen welke praktijken we uit gaan testen. Dit gaan we doen met 20 veehouders in de weideseizoenen van 2025 en 2026, uiteraard in samenwerking met de dierenarts\/adviseur.<\/p>

Naast het uitvoeren van projectactiviteiten op het boerenerf is ZLTO ook verantwoordelijk voor de co\u00f6rdinatie van communicatie activiteiten. We are particularly interested in the effects of climate and weather, and hence climate change, on parasite transmission, and how to best target interventions. Within SPARC we will support sustainable interventions in meat sheep and beef and dairy cattle sectors in the UK.<\/p>

At QUB we will contribute mainly to four activities. Firstly, as leaders of WP2 we will co-ordinate work within this WP, including advancing understanding of the opportunities and barriers to uptake of sustainable parasite control tools, providing lists and technical guides of sustainable interventions, and assessing their economic impact. Secondly, within this WP we will draw on past work including under COST Action COMBAR to develop the basket of options for sustainable parasite control solutions and translate these into applicable guides. Thirdly, as UK partners we will implement the SPARC coaching on participating farms, mentor the coaches and participants, and capture outcomes for the project. Finally, throughout the project we will develop training materials and articles for communication and adapt and help disseminate them in the UK.<\/p>

The need for more sustainable parasite control on ruminant livestock farms has become increasing apparent in recent decades and is urgent but translation onto farms has been impeded by the complexity of sustainable strategies compared with interval anthelmintic dosing. Within SPARC, EV ILVO will assume the role of project coordinator.
